Total Strangers
Land, Sea, Air
Fieldantony gormley was born in London in 1950. throughout his career, he has used his own body as an archetype, the starting point from which to explore the relationships between bodies and the contexts which they inhabit, primarily through the medium of sculpture.
he was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994 and the South Bank prize in 1999.

interviews:
'I am interested in the body because it is the place where emotions are most directly registered. When you feel frightened, when you feel excited, happy, depressed somehow the body registers it.'
'Our place is the consciousness of another. The sculpture's only real place is in the imagination of the viewer. Strange that something so physical can only find a real place within the mind.'
earth from above

u should have already seen those 120 large original prints of photographs taken by france photographer yann arthus bertrand, lining up orchard rd from forum the shopping mall all the way to wheelock place.
they are not just pretty breathtaking photos, there are environmental messages beneath them. useful information like geographical coordinates and exact location names, provide other photographers to continue this ambitious undertaking of spreading the beauty of Earth around the world. The prints have been on exhibitions in places like birmingham.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand's mission was to create a photographic record of the natural world at the start of a new millennium. The collection of 160 images takes viewers off the ground and into the air to witness a bird's eye view of the extraordinary patterns and colours created in landscapes all over the world. Some are the result of human activity - farming, industry or habitation. Others are entirely sculpted by nature itself.

death of a sleeping partner
yest nite 12.40am, display was gone, though there was still a di------- sound, like from those life-monitoring machine in hospitals when the heartbeat has stopped. i was hopeful that in the morning it would be ok.
morning came and display never came on. an apple logo appeared for a while and faded away.
goodbye popontipod. i caused your death.
life without you on my journeys and on bed needs some getting used to.
dampens my mood.
food republic. new food haunt for the nostalgics

there s a new food haunt at orchard! finally finally, finally in orchard, one more choice for food court other than taka, scotts, lucky plaza(not again). the lift on wisma atria level 4 opens to a bustling place with good and cheap food, and so big there should not be any problem finding a seat. i like the 60’s and 70’s decor. pay attention to the kitchen doors, low walls and menu displays. wooden tables and chairs! the place is big but orderly such that it s quite hard to get lost.
breadtalk s boss has quite a vision. it s easy to copy breadtalk's bread, but to copy a food court this large scale, hmm, it takes some gut and thick skin.
statistics:
14 stalls serving hawker delights
8 mini restaurants offering International cuisine from Japan, Thailand, Korea, Taiwan, China and USA
Watch out for:
Sergeant Hainanese Chicken Rice,original recipe from the famous Chatterbox;
Lau Di Fang Scissors – Cut Curry Rice;
Bi Feng Tang,the Cantonese roast specialties;
Granny’s Fine Soup,traditional herbal soups;
Fortunate Restaurant,the old time favourite for Hong Kong Dim Sum

charlie waite's 50 favourite photographs

charlie waite. landscape. the story of 50 favourite photographs.
www.charliewaite.com www.lightandland.co.uk
have just finished reading this photography book by the famous english landscape photographer, charlie waite. this recently published landscape book is not just about pictures and techniques, but more of his personal stories about how that favourite photo of his came about.
one page photo, one page story about the birth of that photo, and exposure details captured by his Hasselblad. photos are in squarish or panoramic format.
and it is these stories that draws me in. usually a good memorable photo is one which is captured after long hours of patient waiting, or by the in-time reflex of the alert mind and finger.
he mentioned that lighting is very important, and plain blue skies are boring in photos, which is why his photos are usually of dark brooding clouds, with a spotlight effect on his desired subject, casted by sunlight piercing through the unexpected break in the clouds behind him.
an abstract from a photo of The Jura, France:
"The foreground was a blaze of light and yet the most remarkable thing was the lack of direct sunlight shining on the scene. The landscape was lit with relatively flat light, but it seemed to come from within the trees. ... There was complete union between me and the landscape that morning. I felt for a moment that all was understood, no questions needed to be asked about anything. For a moment I thought that only I had been privy to this wonderful revelation. Perhaps when it is at its best, this, for me, is what lies at the core of landscape photography: the extraordinarily intimate and intense contact between me and all that loveliness.
At the end of it all I was strangely exhausted, yet I had not moved a metre."
At times during my photography trips, I felt the same way as charlie, strangely exhausted after taking a picture. it must be the excitement and anxiety.
after reading the book, i wish i could get a year off and travel around europe at a leisure pace, taking in all that goodness, on film.
